“After a class I always feel so peaceful.”
Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice for developing mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.
Qigong is often translated to mean “energy work”. To me, Qigong is the practice of cultivating, strengthening and harmonising our natural life force. When life force flows and we can feel the aliveness of our body we become energised, connected and strengthened in ourselves.
What could it do for me?
Qigong is renowned for bringing more ease and simplicity into the body & mind. Due to its long history there is now an incredible breadth of research proving the benefits for the physical body, the mental body and our spiritual life including:
Reducing Stress, Anxiety and Depression
Improving Mood
Improving circulation (useful for everyone, especially those with Cardiovascular issues)
Mobilising the body and relieving pain and inflammation
Creating a deeper sense of peace and self connection
“I feel more in my body”
What happens in a class?
A Qigong class is usually an hour of movement, breath and stillness. Classes are always tailored to the group. During the class there is opportunity to stop, rest, drink water or do whatever it is you need at that time.
Movement
The movements are similar to Tai Chi which you may have seen before. We work with movement and breath for a deeply calming and connected body experience. If you’d like to see what the movements look like, or try at home, you can find videos on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram.
Breath & Stillness
We use gentle awareness of breath and have some minutes of each session dedicated to stillness. It is welcome to sit, stand or lie down as suits you in the moment.
Closing
We close the class with a grounding movement and a gentle check-in with the group. In the Harmony Within Studio there’ll be water available, if we’re on Zoom we say goodbye and recommend enjoying ten minutes (or more) of something gentle like drinking tea, sitting, journaling, being in nature or whatever feels good for you.
What do I need? comfortable, loose clothing. Some people like to stand on a mat and have a cushion to sit on but we don’t need any special equipment or clothing, just to be able to move freely and be comfortable.
“I have always struggled to be still but now I can really just be”
Who can join?
There are two very wonderful things about the practice of qigong.
We don’t need any equipment or special clothing so beginners can join in and enjoy the benefits from the very first practice.
The practice is suitable for everyone. The breath and stillness can be practised by anyone, anywhere, anytime and the movements can be adopted for a full range of mobility levels included lying and seated.
To support the best of mental and physical wellbeing for everyone I offer classes to adults of all ages, families, young people and children. So who can join? …You can!
“My balance is improving and so is my confidence to move”
How do I join?
You are welcome to join online via Zoom or in-person at the Harmony Within Studio in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Currently, all the classes are all reduced to £7 per session as Elle is a trainee Qigong Teacher on a year long journey with the Shiatsu College. To book, view the schedule here.
